Abhyanga Body Therapy
Warm Oil Body Therapy for Nervous System Nourishment
Abhyanga is a traditional Ayurvedic whole-body oil therapy designed to deeply nourish the nervous system, soften the tissues, and invite the body into a state of profound rest.
This treatment is a choreographed, rhythmic application of warm herbal oil, using light, steady strokes from the scalp to the soles of the feet. Generous amounts of oil are applied with the intention of fully enveloping the body in grounding, stabilizing nourishment.
Rather than focusing on muscle manipulation, Abhyanga works through rhythm, warmth, and oil. The oil itself is considered the primary healer — carrying nourishment deep into the tissues while signaling safety and steadiness to the nervous system.
The rhythmic nature of the strokes helps quiet mental activity and supports the mind in settling into a meditative, deeply restorative state.
What to Expect
Abhyanga is offered in person in Belfast, Maine
The session is received without clothing on a heated massage table
Sheets are used throughout for warmth and modesty
Warm herbal oil is applied to the entire body, including the scalp
At the end of the session, warm towels are used to gently remove excess oil — a deeply soothing and grounding experience
After your session, your hair will remain oily. I recommend bringing a hat, scarf, or bandana you don’t mind getting oily to wear afterward.
Why Abhyanga Is Different from Massage
This therapy is not intended to manipulate muscles or “work out tension” in the conventional sense.
Abhyanga’s purpose is to:
Coat the body in herbal oil
Encourage absorption of nourishment into the tissues
Support lymphatic movement and circulation
Calm the nervous system through rhythm and repetition
The experience is gentle, steady, and deeply regulating.
Potential Benefits of Abhyanga

Abhyanga often has the greatest impact when received regularly, which is why I offer this therapy on a sliding scale.
